Final Project

 eco-lamp
  recycled plastic bottles

My inspiration for this piece was to use recycled materials that others see as trash to create something beautiful. I cut triangular pieces from the bottles then strung them together using fishing line. Then, I attached the triangular pieces to this metal frame. The frame was to a hanging planter basket so that was recycled material as well. I will be attaching a light socket in the top to finish the chandelier.

Museum Visit

MODERN ARTS MIDWEST
3615 Dodge St

       Artist: Michael Morgan
Sculpted Brick
The massive size and carved detail is what drew me to this piece. I was told that the artist creates these pieces out of a large mass of clay and carves these bricks out as he goes. He does not create the bricks individually. Instead, he creates the shape of the piece and carves out the designs. The piece is held together with a tack like substance so it can be taken apart and re-constructed. I like how you can take something as familiar as a brick and turn it into something artistic and unique. The contrast of clean, sharp lines with the oblong shapes create a very modern and contemporary design.

 Artist: Catherine Ferguson
"Bungalow" 14x30"
Bronze
This piece caught my attention because it reminded me of our hand sculptures.I enjoy the contrast between the smooth hands and the rough house and jagged trees. The use of the patina finish on the house also adds interest and variety to the piece. The message I get from this piece is showing a stable home where a family can grow and share memories for a lifetime. The tree resembles growth and life. The hands embrace the home showing safety and stability.

 Artist: Ken Peterson
    Animate Object No. 9
    Repositionable Wood Sculpture

The unique shape and movement of this piece intrigued me. The sculpture can be bent into a variety of positions re-creating the piece each time. I like the aspect of movement and being able to interact with the piece, if I were to touch it and bend it!( that probably wouldn't be allowed!) It is a sleek and simple design but the staggered position of the separate pieces make it interesting. The artist gives this sculpture life because he captures an organic feeling of movement.

Jewelry

My new hobby.. Jewelry making! Thinking about taking the class at Metro.

Pastel

Paintings

I found a love for painting in Abstract Art. I am all about being creative and letting the brush do the work. Realism is not interesting to me. I don't have the patience for detail and perfection. However, during my studies at Metro I was forced to paint realistically which was a rewarding challenge because I learned new techniques and styles of painting. But my signature style is Abstract! Most of these are acrylic but I have worked with oil. I did enjoy working with oil but I prefer the fast-drying of acrylic, again.. no patience!

Multiple Casts from Plaster Mold

For this project we had to create a plaster mold and use the mold to make multiple pieces which would become a larger piece of art in the end. I was inspired by a deer antler and decided to recreate aspects of the antlers and bone out of clay. I then used these pieces to create a plaster mold of them so I could make multiples of these fast and easily. I decided to use the pieces as beads and created a tribal like jewelry piece.

Ceramic Hand

This is a representation of my own hand. I struggled at first to capture the realistic quality but after much practice I think I created a convincing piece. I loved the look of the wrinkles in the palm of the hand, it gave the piece a sense of expression.

Ceramics

These are my functional ceramic pieces. I was inspired by another artist named Stig Lindberg who creates these contemporary ceramic vases similar in style to this but smoother and BETTER! you should check him out.  My other smaller pieces were just random ideas.. I like the texture I added to the bird-feather like pot but it's nothing too inspiring.

Wood Carving

This was my first attempt at wood carving. I found an interesting piece of firewood and was inspired by other whimsical carvings of faces that I saw online. I am pleased with how it turned out. I think I captured a sense of nature and an organic feel overall.
